It is reguarded as the industry standard renderer for doing photorealistic rendering. It can do all the fancy things that a renderer needs. Mental Ray has been used to render scenes from movies such as the Matrix trilogy, Panic Room, Fight Club, The Hulk, the Starwars movies etc.
